For the Love of MCM

Magic like this just doesn't happen every day.  When San Diego based architect Kristi Byers invited us to join the design team for this original, 1953, Richard G. Wheeler, Mid Century Modern gem - we seized the opportunity to come in and curate the interiors from roof to floor.  Staying true to this special home while simultaneously bringing it into the 20th centruy required a seamless and trusted chemistry with the architectural team and the client.  There is not a corner of this home that wasn't touched and thought through, details big and small that were lovingly studied, preserved and brought back to life, and interior spaces reimagined into more current, functional, and open flow ideals.  The success of such an endeavor becomes a blurr of responsibilities...everyone is "all in" to where you can't hardly tell a distinction between the owner and the variety of professional disciplines.  All hands on deck, a balance of client involvement and buy-in, a fully invested design team, and mutual trust all along the way is the secret sauce.  For our role on the project, sklarSTUDIOS curated and sourced all of the interior and exterior furnishings, rugs, soft goods, accessories, and artwork, organized the meticulous refurbishing and reincorporated some of the original pieces that came with the house, and designed the custom bedroom built-ins and furniture as well as the outdoor play structure.  And as a bonus to all of the above - this amazing MCM residence achieved a successful MILLS ACT status for the historic preservation remodel.

Big Girl Kitchen

It took 3 years of daily MLS searching to find this home - one that was reasonable to acquire (in SoCal terms) and had good bones, but it needed a lot of love (exactly what they were looking for).  Thankfully this house was not a flip, and for better or worse had not been touched in 35 years, so there was absolutely no guilt for ripping out old finishes and making some much needed transformations.  The Mid Century Modern(ish) nod to this 1966 California Ranch home set forth the inspo along with some eclectic spinoffs of interesting finish transitions the blur the lines between spaces.  It was a complete overhaul - asbestos abatement (ouch), all new windows, new stucco, all new plumbing lines, mimmicking the roof line to achieve vaulted ceilings in the core of the house, relocating the kitchen all together, turning the dining room into an office, the living room into a dining room, and an existing patio into the family room...a total reorg of the Primary Suite...all new finishes, appliances, plumbing fixtures, and cabinetry throughout...and eventually wrapping up the remodel with a full landscape design.  This a place to be with family & friends, to gather, to entertain, to cook and to feast, to work, to study, to create, to exercise, to cuddle, to bathe, to relax, to sleep, to celebrate, and to just BE...all the feels (and a bag of chips)...this is home.

Historic Spanish Bungalow

Location...location...when you love your quaint neighborhood and have put your stake in the ground with three kids, three dogs, and a bearded dragon in a 100 plus year old property, 1558 square feet, increasing construction costs, and in the midst of a global pandemic...you wonder...should we stay or should we go????  GO???  Heck NO...we LOVE it here!  Bound and determined to make their sweet Spanish bungalow fit for their bunch, we dove right in with our clients into another Historic Renovation, and wow - what an amazing transformation.  

Adding 220 square feet for an expanded Primary Suite while eliminating and rearranging some of the interior walls to unify the core of the home into a more cohesive and functional space made a world of difference.  Not only is the end result beautiful, but it is highly functional and efficient in clever and thoughtful ways.  

Generation to Generation

It's a pretty special opportunity to be able breathe new life into the home you grew up in as a kid and now as an adult with a family of your own.  Your fancy -free childhood memories flower into new ones, but now with your own kiddos.  This also likely means that the house requires some TLC and updates through the years. Turning things upsides down to get a new perspective is just part of that change.  Here, we removed a long dividing wall and a reorganized the windows to open up the space and let the sunshine in.  It gave the core of the home an entirely new feeling while expanding the kitchen significantly in both space and function.  The now open floor plan connects the kitchen, family, dining, and work spaces into a unified whole that brings everyone and everything together.

Dream Client - soup to nuts design scope!  This compact, 800 square foot condo is clean, modern and masculine, and a total overhaul from the original spec. apartment finishes!  We brought together the whole package - a fabulous contractor, a combination of custom cabinetry as well as re-facing the lower existing kitchen cabinets, original artwork, furniture with flexibility and storage that is well suited for small spaces, closet design, and turn-key finishing touches with supplying everything down to the linens and kitchen utensils.

The University Club

Combining the warmth of wood against a backdrop of white gives a fresh and clean look to this updated home.  What once was a dark, cave-like space is now nice and bright with updated LED recessed lighting throughout, a fresh coat of white paint, and an overhaul of the core of the house.
